Chester Hotel China by the Taylor, Smith & Taylor Co.

"Chester Hotel China" was the name given to the heavy white ware line of hotelware made by the Taylor, Smith & Taylor Co. of Chester, West Virginia in the early 1900s. Ordinarily pieces from existing lines such as Cable and Granite Staple shapes are marked with a generic TS&T backstamp. When the same pieces were made in the vitrified hotel body, they were given the special Chester Hotel China marking. The earliest pieces are marked Chester Hotel China with no other information, but later examples will have a date code in the marking. If backstamps are any indication, Chester Hotel China did not last beyond the late 1920s.

The hotel line included various sizes of plates, platters, cups, saucers, mugs (shown to the right is the 7 oz. ale mug), sugars, nappies, bakers as well as toilet ware. The catalog page below shows just some of the pieces used in the hotel body.

Chester Hotel China is one of the few instances where TS&T made a product without the company name or initials in the backstamp. Other examples of markings without mention of TS&T include the underglaze "English Abbey" treatments, "Interstate Sunrise Ware" on the Plymouth shape, and the various lines made for Quaker Oats.
