Rose and Poppy, Olivia
[DSN:A26, NS:RET]
Rose and Poppy was an exclusive pattern for Colgate Palmolive Peet from the early 1930s until the late 1950s.
The line started out on the Ivora shape by Crooksville China of Crooksville, Ohio in the late 1920s. Homer Laughlin took over the order around 1930. Homer Laughlin's version was made up of mostly Kwaker shapes. In order to maintain consistency during the transition, HLC continued to make the 9" plates and teacups in the Ivora shape. Ivora teacups look very similar to Brittany cups, but they are not the same. Ivora teacup bodies have a slight curve, whereas Brittany's are flat to better allow for silk screen decorations.
The treatment numbers associated with Rose and Poppy dinnerware for Colgate were:
- K-4124: Kwaker
- K-2734: Kwaker teacups
- I-5024: Ivora teacups
- I-5124: Ivora 9" plates
Rose and Poppy dinnerware was a premium, which could be purchased using coupons from Colgate's Octagon soap. Throughout the years, there were special pieces offered such as a water jug, St. Dennis cups and saucers, and Hudson/Republic teacups and saucers.
The Rose and Poppy decals appeared on other Homer Laughlin shapes such as Nautilus, Virginia Rose, Marigold, Kitchen Kraft, and OvenServe. When on Virginia Rose, author Richard Racheter called it Olivia.
