In the early 1960s, the US Post Office introduced Mr. Zip, a mascot to promote the use of zip codes.
A merchandising campaign was launched with Mr. Zip appearing on lunch boxes, buttons, metal banks, and pottery.
Shown below are two Mr. Zip pieces made at Homer Laughlin: the square ashtray and Irish coffee mug, both trimmed in gold.
The ashtray was given a special overglaze gold marking that included the city, state, and zip code: Newell, West Virginia 26050.
Harker Pottery made a tumbler/pencil holder with Mr. Zip decals. Just like the HLC Mr. Zip ashtray, Harker tumblers were marked with a gold stamp including the city, state, and zip: Chester, West Virginia 26034.
