In the early 1900s, the Homer Laughlin China Company advertised dinnerware in women's magazines such as House Furnishing, Century, Cosmopolitan, McClure's, Good Housekeeping, and Ladie's Home Journal. The first batch from circa 1900 encouraged readers to look for the Homer Laughlin lion and eagle marking and featured examples of American Beauty, Colonial, and Golden Gate.
Around 1912, a second advertising campaign was launched and lasted until 1916. Dinnerware shapes shown in these advertisements include Hudson, Genesee, Empress, and The Angelus. Readers could write in for a free copy of The China Book, the full contents of which can be found on this page.
Below are just a few of the dozens of magazine advertisements from the early 1900s. The date and shapes featured are noted under each one.
