In 1938, the Homer Laughlin China Company made a promotional bowl for Tricolator Products, Inc.
Designer Frederick Rhead created the bowl by taking the Fiesta casserole base and modifying it. According to company records, the original intent was to make a plain version by removing the foot, rings, and flutes on the handles. Rhead noted in his journals the first model was made from clay on January 6, 1938. However, the first version was altered with the rings and handle flutes put back along with an impressed Tricolator marking.
By the spring of 1938, the bowls were offered with Tricolator coffee pots to create promotional sets. In the advertisement matte below, it was listed as a "pottery vegetable dish" with no mention of Fiesta.
Tricolator bowls have been found in the first six Fiesta glazes: red, yellow, green, blue, old ivory, and turquoise.
The Hall China Company made coffee pots for Tricolator from the 1930s into the 1950s. In general, Tricolator products are not hard to find, however the Fiesta Tricolator bowls are scarce so the promotion must have been short lived.
