Fiesta® Classic Rim Bowls
Vintage Fiesta® Nappies and Fruit Bowls

The vintage Fiesta® line (1936 - 1969) had four straight-sided bowls in its assortment: two nappies (an old pottery term for a vegetable or serving bowl) and two fruit bowls. The nappies, measuring 9 ½" and 8 ½" in diameter, and the 5 ½" fruit bowls were among the first pieces of Fiesta® introduced in January 1936. The 4 ¾" fruit bowl came out two years later in 1938.

The 9 ½" nappy was discontinued in 1946 and can be found in the first six Fiesta® glazes: red, old ivory, blue, yellow, light green, and turquoise. The 4 ¾" fruit bowl was discontinued in 1959. It can be found in all eleven Fiesta® glazes: red, old ivory, blue, yellow, light green, turquoise, forest green, gray, rose, chartreuse, and medium green.

The 8 ½" nappy and the 5 ½" fruit bowl remained in production until the line was restyled into Fiesta Ironstone in 1969.

The factory has produced several bowls in the contemporary Fiesta® (1986 to present) using the same straight sided shape. The only bowl that directly carried over from the vintage line was the 8 ½" nappy. The others are newly sized pieces with no vintage counterparts.

The Fiesta Tableware Company has begun to refer to many of the straight sided bowls as "classic rim" bowls due to their similarity to the original 1930s versions. The name change was also to differentiate the bowls from other styles, namely the bistro bowls.

Small Classic Rim Bowl

The small classic rim bowl was not part of Fiesta®'s reintroduction in 1986; however, it was added to the line soon after. It measures 5 ⅝" in diameter and has been made in every glaze except sapphire.

Small classic rim bowls originally were marked with a debossed Fiesta® HLC-USA mark, which was changed to Fiesta® USA in May 2021.

Fiesta® Medium Classic Rim Bowl

The medium classic rim bowl, a.k.a. cereal bowl, was part of the 1986 reintroduction. Measuring 6 ⅞" in diameter, it is often included in boxed place settings and other sets.

Its marking has changed three times, resulting in four distinct forms. The Made in USA marking ran from 1986 until it was replaced by a circular Fiesta® HLC-USA mark in 2007. On November 11, 2020, the HLC was dropped from the circular mark and the USA was repositioned. The most recent change occurred in August 2021 when the circular mark was changed to Fiesta® USA.

Fiesta® Large Classic Rim Bowl

Like the medium classic rim bowl, the large classic rim bowl was part of Fiesta®'s reintroduction in 1986. It can be found in every glaze and is still in production.

The large classic rim bowl is the only one of the newer bowls that came directly from the vintage line. However, because of the different bodies of clay used, vintage ones are slightly larger. Large classic rim bowls made today are roughly 8 ¼" in diameter and hold 40 ounces.

The marking from the vintage 8 ½" nappy was carried over for the newer version. This mark was eliminated around 1995 so an underglaze backstamp could be applied.

Fiesta® Companion Bowl

The companion bowl was modeled in 2006. It was designed to go with the 11 ⅝" platter to create 2-piece companion sets. In the promotion, it was listed as a "medium vegetable" bowl.

Companion bowls measure 7 ¼" in diameter. There has been only one marking for the companion bowl: the circular Fiesta® HLC-USA debossed mark.
